TAVS - Test of Auditory and Visual Skills

TAVS is a unique tool for assessing many subtle areas of auditory and visual processing. Screening areas that are important for listening, reading and attention skills can help you to understand the challenges that children may be having within the classroom or at home.

Many auditory tests use speech to assess auditory processing function. Whilst this is important, TAVS assesses much more fundamental auditory and visual processes that underpin listening and other skills.

Furthermore, the algorithms built into the TAVS machine will automatically adjust the stimulus based on each previous response to achieve a 'best value' or threshold level. Auditory testing offered on a fixed CD cannot offer this level of flexibility.

Portable and easy to use, each individual area of screening can be completed in only 3 minutes. It is a powerful indicator towards programmes such as The Listening ProgramŽ and progress can be monitored and seen in the different areas of visual and auditory processing.

TAVS screens the following areas:

  • Temporal Order Processing
  • Auditory and visual fusion threshold
  • Auditory motor skills (rhythm)
  • Pitch discrimination
  • Duration Pattern
  • Sound localisation
  • Pitch pattern perception
  • Gap in noise
  • Auditory and visual cross modality function

If you work with children or adults with learning difficulties
this is a vital screening tool.

The TAVS Certification Course is available as a LIVE 1 day course or as a web-based course.

This is a is a comprehensive introductory course for professionals to become qualified in the administration of the Test of Auditory and Visual Skills (TAVS); including lecture, independent study, and hands- on practical experience. You will acquire the knowledge you need to begin using this exciting tool for screening auditory and visual processing.

Further, you will understand the individual elements that make up strong auditory processing skills and be able to use TAVS to assess them. These areas such as temporal processing, pitch perception, gap detection and beat competency are known to be vital for strong listening, language development, reading and rhythm awareness.

Upon successful completion of this course, learners are authorised to administer TAVS, a versatile screening tool for ages 5 and upwards which is ideal for use with The Listening Program, inTime, and other interventions that seek to improve fundamental sensory processing skills.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes:

  • Review and understand auditory processing terms, screening areas, and relate them to functional skills.
  • Understand the scientific basis for testing the 12 areas offered by TAVS.
  • Hands-on experience with the use of the TAVS device, prompt cards, user guide and record sheets.
  • Demonstrate competence in the administration of the pretest, quick and full screening, adjusting screening parameters, recording and interpreting results.
  • Implement the TAVS assessment with children and adults.

Equipment Requirement:

  • TAVS device and headphones
  • User guide and record sheets
  • Prompt cards

Additional TAVS systems can be purchased separately.

If you work in a facility that has a TAVS device available for your use during the course you may register for the course only, excluding the TAVS system.

Completion Requirements:

  • Attend course.
  • Receive a passing score of 80% or higher on course exam.

After learners have satisfactorily completed the course, they may use the designation 'TAVS Certified Provider" or 'Certified Provider of TAVS'.

Course Date:

There are currently no live training courses scheduled however the online course is a very effective way to complete your training to work with TAVS.
